As much as Denise"™s
Published October 3, 2008, 12:14 am, New Matilda
As much as Denise’s opinion frustrates me I don’t think that it helps anyone’s cause to call her names. She said herself, in another post that: "Israel has served the purpose intended; that of consolidating Judaism as a world-wide religion now capable of surviving the complete destruction/transformation of the state of Israel" So instead of notching up blame and assigning responsibility for ...

That's like trying to talk about being a Cleveland sports fan without ...

Pundits Side With Wall Street Over Main Street

How dare you throw that tea in Boston Harbor! Such is the anti-democratic arrogance of the fearmongering pundits and politicians who tell us if we taxpayers don't instantly give the Wall Street banking bandits a $700 billion bailout, then we are destroying America. Instead of applauding representatives from both parties who, for once, heeded the public rather than the fat cats, the established ...

In recent weeks, self-styled "modesty patrols" have been accused of breaking into the apartment of a Jerusalem woman and beating her for allegedly consorting with men. They have torched a store that sells MP4 players, fearing devout Jews would use them to download pornography. Many ultra-Orthodox Jews are dismayed by the violence, but the enforcers often enjoy quiet approval from rabbis eager to protect their own reputations as guardians of the faith, community members say. And while some welcome anything that keeps secular culture out of their cloistered world, others feel terrorized,

- The Upcoming Voice - Israel's ultra-Orthodox Jewish answer to The X Factor. No room for Mr Nasty It's got polite judges, boring outfits and safe songs - but orthodox Israel's new talent show is a winner: Polite judges aren't the only departure from the X Factor format. Traditionally, ultra-Orthodox Jews have had little or no contact with the arts. This changed in the mid-1990s, when the younger generation became fed up with going without music. A wave of musicians - mostly wedding singers who saw a gap in the market - started releasing "kosher music". Frivolous subjects such as love and sexual attraction are out, and the lyrics are usually prayers or Biblical verses. Only men are permitted to perform. The genre came into its own 8 years ago, when the Chevra, burst on to the scene with Y'hay Shlama, an upbeat pop song that set an Aramaic prayer to a Britney-esque beat. One reason for the scarcity of popular singers is that ultra-Orthodox men tend to marry and start families young, which doesn't leave much time for a musical career. Another is that education for children is heavily religious, followed by several years in Talmudic seminary;

- Howard Lisnoff: The Long Silence: American Jews and Palestinians. "I have been silent as a Jew about Israel's relationship to, and treatment of, the Palestinian people and my place as an American Jew in that equation.": Jews in the US were expected to accept their roles as supporters of whatever policy Israel adopted. Those Jews who wavered would be open to the most vicious attacks. Finkelstein typifies this. After a campaign of vicious attacks aimed at silencing his scholarly criticism of Israel?s treatment of the Palestinian people and the industry that had grown up, primarily in the US to profit from the horror of the Holocaust. His books, among them The Holocaust Industry and Beyond Chutzpah (2005) have drawn stinging attacks. Among his most vehement detractors is Dershowitz. The power of the Jewish lobby in the US is partially explained by studying the monetary might behind that influence. The most powerful of these organizations is the AIPAC, which had a $33 million budget.. James David reports that the Israel lobby had contributed $41M to US candidates. Stephen Zunes states that ?more than $1.5 billion in private US funds?go to Israel annually.?

- In Israel, religious schools get a boost - Los Angeles Times: He is one of tens of thousands of Israeli young men studying to master the Torah and the Talmud, cloistered at ultra-Orthodox schools that shield them from secular teachings that might shake their faith. In a defining battle over the Jewish state's identity, the yeshivas are resisting pressure from secular politicians and educators to teach the basic subjects required at all Israeli secondary schools. "They want to turn us into what they see as 'enlighte ned people of the world,' who will integrate into Israeli society," he said. "But we do not want to integrate into that society, because of its many temptations.&q uot; Haredi Jews, as the ultra-Orthodox are known here, won the latest skirmish. Parliament last month legalized state funding for high school-age boys' yeshivas while reclassifying them as "cultural ly unique" schools, exempt from the obligation to add on a basic secular curriculum.
