- 'Racist' marriage law upheld by Israel - Middle East, World - The Independent: Israel's High Court has narrowly upheld a law denying Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza married to Israeli citizens the right to live in the country with their spouses. The judges voted by six to five not to cancel a four-year-old amendment to the Citizenship Law which outlaws "family unification&qu ot; in Israel between Palestinians and Arab citizens of Israel. It was passed as a one-year emergency measure in 2002 on the ground that it was needed to protect Israeli security. - Project Syndicate --God's Warriors Are Multiplying by Raja Kamal. Israel has been slowly evolving from a culturally Jewish democracy into a religiously dominated one.: Israel?s Haredi ultra-orthodox religious community is growing at a rate so high that it is redefining the political landscape. According to Israeli government statistics, Haredi Jews average 7.6 children per woman, almost 3 times the rate of the population as a whole. Of the Israeli Knesset?s 120 members, 20 (all male) are ultra-Orthodox , up from five just a couple of decades ago. The number of ultra-Orthodox in the Knesset is projected to grow further as their constituents multiply. In the fractured political landscape typical of Israel, this would make it possible for organized religious parties to exert significant power over the government. At the same time, many educated and secular Israelis are choosing to emigrate, seeking a life without ceaseless conflicts. It is estimated that about half a million Israelis, including 25% of Israel?s leading scholars, now reside in the US. Indeed, some 40,000 Israelis reside in Silicon Valley alone.

- How Grandma Rachel conserved water - Haaretz - Israel News: Statistics published by the Knesset's research division, nothing has been done in the last decade to save water in either the municipal or household sectors, despite the fact that the growing problem of dwindling water supplies was known to all the relevant decision makers, as well as to the public at large. The chairman of the public committee entrusted with examining how the water supply is managed, estimated as far back as the mid-1990s that municipalities and local councils had the potential to save up to 150 million cubic meters of water per year, 20% of the total amount of water this sector consumes annually. Today, it is clear that attempts at scare-mongerin g and preaching to the public have not helped in conserving water
